Takin’ it easy!

When it comes to a true hands-free experience while on the open road, GMC’s Super Cruise has you covered! In fact, your desire to take the stress out of the day-to-day commutes in heavy traffic or cross-country adventures is fulfilled, with Super Cruise allowing for that ease of driving on more than 400,000 miles of compatible roads in the United States and Canada.

Here’s more…

How it’s offered!

Considered the industry’s first true hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads and functions, Super Cruise is made available for the 2023 GMC Sierra Denali, 2023 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate and GMC HummerEV. Drivers can take advantage of three years of access to Super Cruise functionality. With this experience, drivers have the ability to travel hands-free on more than 400,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada, with the added benefit on the Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate of Lane Change on Demand and Automatic Lane Change.

How it works!

Super Cruise is a system which utilizes a data connection from GMC Connected Services for real-time precise positioning as well as periodic Super Cruise map updates. Through cameras, sensors and LiDAR map data, drivers have the ability to stay centered in their lane while driving hands-free. This system helps detect road positioning, curves, current travel speed and especially, and most importantly, surrounding vehicles. While Super Cruise is enabled, the vehicle’s acceleration and braking are handled thanks to Adaptive Cruise Control.

How it looks!

Within the cabin is a Driver Attention System that consists of a camera integrated on top of the steering column as well as infrared emitters integrated into the steering wheel. These components are in place to ensure drivers are paying attention at all times!

Also, a Super Cruise symbol will display on the instrument Cluster when and if a compatible road is detected. At that point the driver, who must already be using Adaptive Cruise Control, can simply press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel when deemed safe to do so. Once the symbol and light bar illuminate green, and the vehicle is centered in the lane, those are both the “go sign” that the driver can remove his or her hands from the wheel.

It is important to note that despite this ease of driving, drivers must always be aware and pay attention to the road. Hands free does not mean eyes free! To make sure this occurs, the car will remind you! To that end, there will be three separate prompts that the Driver Attention System will initiate. They are:

First prompt: the light bar on the wheel will begin flashing green! That means it’s time to get your eyes back on the road!

Second prompt: the steering wheel light bar will flash red, and chimes will sound. In addition, the Safety Alert Seat will vibrate and the car’s acceleration will disengage, although Adaptive Cruise Control will still function.

Thirdly, a prompt in the form of a voice will let the driver know to take control immediately if the light bar continues to flash red. At this point, if the driver still fails to respond, the vehicle will come to a complete stop by the system. Then, an Emergency-Certified OnStar Advisor will take over, calling into the vehicle to check on the status of the driver. Finally, Super Cruise and Adaptive Cruise Control will disengage.

How it prepares!

Planning to use your Super Cruise is a path rooted in convenience. Through the use of Google Maps on the vehicle’s new multicolor 13.4-inch digital touch screen and GMC Infotainment System with available Google built in, Super Cruise compatible roadways will be identified. They will appear as part of the route overview on the screen and be highlighted in white. That white line then disappears from view once the driver has selected a route. They need to then only select the Alternate Routes Overview on the touch screen to switch views and find another compatible road. A wide range of screen combinations and reconfigurability is also present.

How it applies!

Super Cruise is not just for handling curves and travel speeds. It can also assist in changing lanes when traveling on compatible roads, automatically initiating turns when suitable openings are detected. To wait for that opening, the Super Cruise will even slow the car down to a minimum gap distance until it is time to switch lanes.

How it excels!

Hands-free capability through Super Cruise is even enhanced for the new Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate while trailering, with the technology compatible with trailers up to the allowable weight limits on both trucks. This means that the technology not only gives your hands a rest while you drive, but while you pull a utility trailer for whatever purpose!

With the use of real-time positioning, cameras, sensors and LiDAR map data as well as in conjunction with GMC Connected Services, Super Cruise is your clear path to taking it easy!
