Going the distance!

At its beginnings in 2017, GMC Super Cruise was impressive, providing a hands-free advanced driver assistance system on around 130,000 compatible highway miles. In 2022 that number increased to 400,000, and continues to jump! In this recent announcement, that jump is to more than 750,000 miles across the United States and Canada, and the news is nothing short of amazing! In fact, it makes GM hold the title having the largest hands-free driving network in North America!

What else we know!

Most notable about this new mileage expansion is that adds several new minor highways which serve as a connection to rural towns and roads, as well as to more major highways. This is not just an update of miles, but also of vehicles. For example, the 2024 Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia will now feature Super Cruise as well, joining the likes of the Chevy Tahoe, Blazer EV, Cadillac Escalade and also the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. For the cars receiving the new update, a new full map will be presented in roughly a month.

The new miles will soon trickle into Super Cruise-capable vehicles through over-the-air updates, although there are a few cars that will not receive them. They include the Cadillac XT6, the Cadillac CT6 and the Chevy Bolt EUV.

The expanded miles are not the only new news! SuperCruise is also being presented with some added features and updates, including Lane Change on Demand, Automatic Lane Change, Enhanced Navigation, Hands-Free Trailering and Improved Curve Handling.

How it works!

The green light that illuminates in the steering wheel rim indicates SuperCruise in use, with the vehicle then steering, accelerating, braking and changing lanes on its own. These functions, however, are only in place along compatible roads and with the driving paying close attention.

A camera faces drivers to ensure they are focused on the road and not asleep, watching a movie or hauling themselves into the back seat!

All in all, customers are able to use this system all the more due to the expansion of road miles, which, in essence, is similar to traveling one way from Earth to the Moon three times or taking a coast-to-coast road trip from New York City to San Francisco and back nearly 130 times! The startling numbers don’t stop there! With this expansion, Honda’s Super Cruise will now be nearly six times more the coverage of any other hands-free driver assistance technologies on the market today!

More roads, more vehicles and for more people to enjoy, “GM is all-in on safely deploying Super Cruise,” Anantha Kancherla, GM vice president of ADAS, said. “A key part of that is expanding the road network — in this case nearly doubling it again — with LiDAR mapped highways.”

“High-precision LiDAR mapping gives us an operating domain where we are confident in Super Cruise’s abilities.”

This expansion is especially appealing to those drivers with compatible trailers who camp, boat and use recreational vehicles. GM stands behind the fact it is the only hands-free system to offer trailering capability. Super Cruise with trailering is available on models like the 2024 Chevrolet Traverser 2024 GMC Acadia.

The feedback!

A whopping amount — more than 80 percent to be exact — of surveyed owners with Super Cruise have indicated that it makes driving much more relaxing, and it is the second most important reason for choosing the vehicle in the first place. Drivers also enjoy many new and enhanced features and capabilities since Super Cruise came out, including Lane Change on Demand, Automatic Lane Change, Enhanced Navigation, Industry-First and only Hands-Free Trailering, Collaborative Steering, Enhanced Driver Requested Offset and Improved Handling.

This expansion of miles marks GM as a true leader in this arena and is an example of the extraordinary progress they have made. The connection of highways and to many rural destinations through this increase in compatible roads means that drivers now have so many more choices and better coverage of hands-free driving, exciting news to say the least!

These new roads have begun being added incrementally over the air, at no additional charge, and will continue to be added through 2025. Super Cruise, powered by OnStar connectivity, is not only the wave of the future, but is surely “going the distance!” Take advantage of this key feature today!
