EV off-gridders fear not – problem is solved!

When it comes to off-roading, especially in Moab, there is little time for details – like finding time to top off electricity. But thanks to new fast-charging stations, that problem has been solved! Off-roading enthusiasts can now take their battery-powered vehicles to Moab in Utah with no fear thanks to Electrify America, which has opened a series of fast-charging stations in the region. This is problem solving at its finest – and fastest!

The back story!

It was back in May, 2023, that Electrify America announced its plans to open 20 new DC fast-charging stations in Utah. That included 80 individual chargers spanning 15 stations in and around Salt Lake City, as well as five others in the surrounding regions. Each of those stations would boast a minimum of four chargers with charging speeds up to 350 kW. The launch of these new stations was part of a collaboration with Rocky Mountain Power, with chargers in Moab poised to be among the first to open.

That has now become a wonderful reality – with 20 fast charging stations open for business in the land of off-roading, whitewater rafting, rock climbing and more! Their aim is to provide rapid charging to electric-powered off-roaders who are looking for a day of adventure in the eastern Utah city, which is a gateway to massive red rock formations in Arches National Park.

And while any EV can use the chargers, there are very few all-electric off-roaders equipped with DC fast-charge capabilities. Those include the Rivian R1S and R1T, the Tesla Cypertruck, when equipped with AWD, and the GMC Hummer EV.

Road-testing with ease!

Thanks to fast-charging stations now available in Moab, many off-roaders are putting their vehicle to the test. That includes the GMC Hummer EV SUV for 2024. With production of the pickup version under way, off-road testing is planned in Moab ahead of its launch next year.

In fact, social media posts on LinkedIn from General Motors president Mark Reuss showed Hummer EV SUV prototypes hot on the trails in Utah’s off-road haven. These SUVs ride on a 126.7-inch wheelbase, which result in better departure and breakover angles, as well as a turning circle of 35.4 feet – 1.7 feet shorter than the pickup.

The SUV will also feature CrabWalk, which utilizes four-wheel steering for sideways maneuvering. In addition, Extract Mode, which raises the ride height to 15.9 inches from the standard 9.9 inches, and GM’s SuperCruise hands-free highway driver-assist system will also be presented.

Off-road enthusiasts can take advantage of the Hummer EV SUV Edition 1, with the version arriving for the 2024 model year and carrying a price of $105,595. It features three electric motors that produce a combined 830 hp and more than 1,000 lb-ft of torque. With the Watts to Freedom launch mode, it makes the jump from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

In terms of its range abilities, the Edition 1 will have a 20-module battery pack that allows for more than 300 miles of range, and an 800-volt electrical architecture to enable DC fast-charging speeds up to 300 kw. An optional Extreme Off-Road Package drops that range to 280 miles, but adds 35-inch mud-terrain tires, underbody armor, and rock sliders, with a higher price of $110,595.

Savvy consumers can also be encouraged by the fact that a less-expensive Hummer EV SUV is forthcoming. It will come in a EV3X version, costing $99,995 and will follow Edition 1 deliveries, and feature the same tri-motor powertrain, as well as a dual-motor EV2X with an $89,995 base price. Both will offer more than 300 miles or range. Also, a 250-mile dual-motor EV2 model is planned, and will carry a $79,995 price tag.

In a town that is not only the popular base for mountain bikers, but for off-roaders, these charging stations make those EV users surely accommodated. When it comes to topping off electricity, it is now a breeze in Moab! Your adventure awaits – and your problem is solved!
