Let’s review!
Representing the first rung in GMC’s heavy-duty lineup, the Sierra 2500 made its debut four years ago, doing nothing but improving since that time! Thanks for a variety of upgrades, specifically in the areas of power and performance, the Sierra hits the ground running.
It is presented with two engine options, with the base engine being a gas-fed 6.6-liter V8 that makes 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. There is also an available 6.6-liter Duramax V8 turbo diesel that takes power to 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque, with the engine offering 25 percent more low-end torque compared to last year. In addition, the gasoline engine also upgrades to a 10-speed transmission, replacing the previous six-speed. This results in what is awesome news – conventional towing increases to 21,900 pounds for crew-cab and 22,500 pounds for regular- and extended-cab models.
In the area of towing, there is nothing better than the heavy-duty Sierra 2500, starting at $45,400. To achieve the highest tow rating, buyers must opt for the available turbodiesel engine, the Regular Cab, rear-wheel drive and the Max Trailering Package, moving you on up to a whopping 22,500 pounds of towing capability.
Off-road enthusiasts are especially pleased, thanks to the new AT4X trim that improves on the returning AT4 model, while the new Denali Ultimate trim takes luxury to all-new heights.
Inside, the Sierra 2500 boasts a huge dashboard that serves to host a variety of user-friendly switchgear. Most models are presented with a split-folding front bench that can be replaced with a pair of bucket seats and a full center console. Buyers also have the option to outfit the interior with a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats and wireless charging.
For those desiring the “ultimate,” look no further than the new Denali Ultimate trim, as grand as you can get, complete with leather-wrapped interior pieces, Paldao wood trim pieces and a soft microsuede headliner.
The interior is also very roomy, with extensive passenger space in the crew cab and plenty of interior cubby storage. Its standards and long cargo boxes have built-in steps on both sides of the bed, as do the rear bumper at each corner. This box can be further customized with LED lighting, movable tie-downs and a 120-volt outlet.
Unfortunately, the soft-touch surfaces are outnumbered by hard plastics, although higher trims get a few nicer touches.
There’s room inside for between three and six people, depending on the configuration. The single-row Regular Cab seats three people on a front bench seat, while both the Double Cab and Crew Cab can seat five or six. All of these seats are comfy and spacious, and in the Double Cab, the rear seats also boast a nice amount of legroom, even more in the Crew Cab, ensuring your passengers have a wonderful experience.
The Sierra’s long bed measures 8 feet, 2 inches or a standard bed of 6 feet, 10 inches. Payload ratings range from 3,381 to 3,850 pounds.
On the up side, the vehicle’s showstopper is the innovative multi-function tailgate, featuring six different positions that include a work surface and bench.
Buyers have the option of lighting and a household-style power outlet for the bed, a MultiPro tailgate and a spray-in bed liner.
In the area of technology and connectivity, the Sierra definitely has you covered. That is due to its standard touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Base models can be outfitted with a 120-volt outlet and a mobile hotspot, while most trim levels have an 8.0-inch screen and additional charging ports.
When it comes to safety, the Sierra for 2024 has not been crash tested, although it comes with a good number of safety features for its class. Those include automatic high-beam headlights and pedestrian detention. For child safety needs, the Double Cab and Crew Cab models come equipped with two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.
With a predicted reliability score of 87 out of 100 and a J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91 out of 100, the Sierra is noteworthy. It also receives a critics’ rating which is average for the class.
If price is a main consideration, which it is for many, it is important to have the facts! The base 2024 Sierra 2500 HD Pro comes in at $45,400, with rear-wheel drive and 7-inch touch screen among its perks. The SLE Trim is priced at $50,200 and features a multifunction tailgate, 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and cruise control. A step higher, and for $61,500, buyers selecting the SLT trim gain benefits such as 10-way power-adjustable front seats and a heated steering wheel.
The AT4, at $70,100, is an off-roaders dream, complete with standard equipment like four-wheel drive and off-road suspension. The highest level Denali, which goes for $74,200, adds leather upholstery and a universal garage opener, among other key items. An upgraded off-road experience to be had with the AT4X costs $82,800 and comes with a full-locking rear differential and adaptive cruise control. The range-topping Denali Ultimate can be yours for $92,900 and comes standard with the Duramax turbo diesel engine and also adds power-retractable assist steps.
For overall value, experts recommend the SLE Trim, which, for just under $5,000 more than the base model, drivers are treated to more functionality and a few useful additions to the pickup’s interior technology.
An optional diesel engine promising plenty of power, helpful in-cab tech and towing camera system, configurable MultiPro tailgate option for more versatility and variety in its lineup, and the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 is all things refreshing. Part of the fourth Sierra 2500HD generation introduced in 2020 and a true heavy hitter, take the plunge and reserve yours today!
