2020 GMC SIERRA 2500 HD/3500 HD

With a strong reputation for incredible performance in the area of diesel heavy duty trucks, Sierra Heavy Duty in the new 2020 model has taken those credentials to a whole new level. Sierra HD’s available 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 is able to deliver 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque, allowing for a more efficient performance time and time again. This is possible by both increasing cooling capacity by way of a larger radiator and fan, as well as improving the air induction system. Thanks to a dual-path intake system that draws dense, cool air through both the hood scoop and front grille, performance is optimized to the highest level.
This new Sierra marks the launch of an all-new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, which is the first ever of this type presented in the heavy duty pickup segment. This transmission results in closer gear spacing than before, thus allowing the engine to perform in an optimal range at all times with varying load and terrain conditions.
The Duramax/Allison combo also incorporates an integrated engine exhaust break. This serves to leverage the engine’s back pressure and the Sierra HD’s driveline components. This assists in controlling the truck and trailer’s speed while descending, reducing the need to apply the service breaks when on long, steep grades. Also, even over hilly terrain, the exhaust brake being tied to the cruise control system allows a set speed to be easily maintained, another great feature of this vehicle!
Also joining the lineup is an all-new 6.6L gasoline V8 engine, the only gasoline direct-injected V8 engine in the heavy duty pick up segment. With an impressive 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, this engine boasts an 11 percent increase in horsepower and 22 percent increase in peak torque in comparison to the previous 6.0L gas engine. GMC pairs its 6.6L gasoline V8 with the 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission.
Thanks to the larger, stronger components of the rear axles, increased gross axle weight ratings are achieved as well as the effective delivery of as much torque to the ground as possible. This upgraded driveline includes new, larger and more robust front and rear axles, a standard 11.5-inch ring gear on 2500HD models, and a large 12-inch rig gear on the 3500 HD diesel models. Also, and most notable, the Sierra 3500 HD does not need to limit torque in first gear. This results in the transmission of all of the trucks’s trailer-pulling power to the wheels from a standing start.

Its specialty when it comes to trailering includes anything from the conventional and gooseneck to fifth-wheel trailer and more. Considered the most capable heavy duty truck in the segment, it has bragging rights connected to a best-in-class maximum gooseneck trailering of up to 35,500 lbs. This is a whopping 52 percent greater than the outgoing model. It also has a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 43,500 pounds.
The Sierra Heavy Duty also presents a number of advanced features that makes trailering an exercise in control and confidence at all times. For example, there is available a ProGrade Trailering System which provides pre-departure checklists, an integrated trailer light test, customizable trailer profiles and trailer tire pressure and temperature monitoring. This feature also gives access to trailer information through the myGMC smartphone app. Sierra’s flexible exterior camera system is top notch, providing up to 15 different views when properly equipped. This is more than any other competitive truck in its class.
GMC has also developed the new smart trailer integration, which is made to work with ASA Electronics IN-Command Control System. This is designed to integrate with and be accessed through the myGMC mobile app on your smart phone or on the vehicle’s infotainment system via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This works by allowing drivers to monitor and control a range of smart systems, such as water tank levels, HVAC controls and even power slide-outs.
ITS OFF-ROAD ABILITY….
Have the need to off road it? GMC has you covered! The Sierra HD provides drivers with an off-road ability that is amazing. Even better, this ability comes without sacrificing any heavy duty capability. To help in clearing rugged terrain, Sierra HD models offer at least 10 inches of ground clearance, as well as an improved approach angle and a re-positioned diesel exhaust fluid tank on diesel models, which also allows for additional clearance. An available X31 off-road package provides purposefully-tuned off-road suspension and Rancho shocks, as well as skid plates. The beauty of Hill Descent Control is also made clear by leveraging ABS braking technology to deliver a smooth and controlled descent over all uneven surfaces. Also, there is seamless shifting due to a new 2-speed Autotrac transfer case with an active four-wheel drive setting.
